Midori is the code name for a managed code operating system being developed by Microsoft Research. It has been reported to be a possible commercial implementation of the Singularity operating system, a research project started in 2003 to build a highly-dependable operating system in which the kernel, device drivers, and applications are all written in managed code. It was designed for concurrency, and can run applications in multiple places. It also features an entirely new security model that sandboxes applications for increased security. Microsoft has mapped out several possible migration paths from Windows to Midori. In a possible link to Microsoft’s Oslo composite application initiative, the programming model will have a dependence on metadata, with the aim of allowing the system to more reliably manage applications.

The code name Midori was first discovered through the PowerPoint presentation CHESS: A systematic testing tool for concurrent software.

Midori has also been rumoured by some IT journalists as a possible replacement to Microsoft Windows and Windows CE.

In April 2009, Jonathan S. Shapiro, a driving force behind both the BitC programming language and the Coyotos operating system[9] announced that he had accepted a position at Microsoft to work on the Midori project, and that after August 2009 he would not be working further on BitC.[10]

Windows Mobile

In 2008, Gizmodo wrote that Windows Mobile 8 will be built on Midori rather than Windows CE[citation needed] meaning that Windows Mobile will be completely redesigned and redeveloped. That rumor was inferred from SD Time's original reporting. Microsoft's internal documents about Midori referenced Midori replacing Windows Mobile, but did not state a timetable. It is rumored that Windows Mobile 8 will implement a completely redesigned user interface, "revolutionary" features like global search and new concepts such as automation and connections within the phone and possibly ideas borrowed from other smartphone operating systems. This could also mean that when viewing a contact card, a map of that area could be easily navigated to; like Internet Explorer 8 accelerators.[citation needed] Windows Mobile 8 will add support for gestures on auxiliary screens.[citation needed]
